Just A Little… Blue?

Over the years, Poiema Visual Arts has connected its growing community through regular social media postings. Not surprisingly, the following content, written during a particularly difficult season for me as a leader, remains one of our most impactful posts. New friends (aka strangers) have written without prompting and it has been shared by many searching for hope. To make these thoughts more easily accessible on dark days, we are sharing them here on our blog page. May the Lord use them to encourage you and those you love on those days… you know, the blue ones.

We all have those days. You know, the blue ones. Those days when hope seems deflated and our energy drained. Those moments when we question if we will ever be good enough and whether anyone really cares that we are falling apart. Those days when it appears no one is willing to help… Yes, those are the days; you know, the blue ones.

Isn’t it ironic that we use one of the rainbow’s exalted shades - blue - to refer to this time of despair? As an artist, have you noticed that during this time we close ourselves off from all that is good? Creativity is quenched.

The Bible says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12, NIV).

During these days, we need a fresh infusion of hope. We need life and creativity. We need our Savior, Jesus, most of all. What we don’t need is for the blue to go away… We need a new way of looking at it.

So, how about this: Historically, blue has also meant fidelity/ faithfulness. The next time you are having one of those days (you know, the blue ones), remember that the light of Christ is the complement to your melancholy. Remember when the blue emerges that God will always be faithful to His children. Use the blue as a reminder to faithfully press on with whatever task He has placed in your hands. Blue doesn’t mean you are alone. It’s a reminder that when it hurts, you are loved by the One who will never leave you.

So, make it one of those days… you know, one of those big, beautiful blue ones.
